We spent our time in Rhodes City, in the old part where the walls are. Rhodes is very picturesque and felt quite different from other parts of Europe. You entered the city from one of 9 gates off the harbor.
This is St. Paul's Gate. We spent lots of time at the harbor here. The Collosus of Rhodes once stood over the entrance to the harbor from the Aegean Sea. It was destroyed by Romans when they took over.
Here we are on the Avenue of the Knights. Seven different countries posted knights here in the middle ages to protect their sea business. The street is preserved really well and the old inns now house government offices.
More pics from the city wall at the edge of the harbor.
When the Collosus was here, one of his feet stood at the right side of this peninsula.
We just wandered and ate a great real Greek lunch. I had the yummiest tzaziki ever and some authentic saginaki. I think we'll be visiting Greektown in Detroit more often when we move back!
